Village Guide: Sami — Kefalonia's Ferry Port and Cave Gateway
Sami (Σάμη) sits on the eastern coast of Kefalonia, looking across the strait toward the mountains of the Greek mainland. It is the island's main ferry port for connections to Patras and Italy, which means it sees more arriving and departing travellers than any other settlement on the island. As a village, it is modest — a working port with a wide waterfront square, some decent tavernas, and the kind of unpretentious atmosphere that appeals to travellers who have had enough of polished coastal resorts.
Getting There
Ferries to Sami operate from Patras (3.5–4 hours) and from Brindisi and Ancona in Italy via Patras. If you're travelling to Kefalonia from the mainland or from Italy by ferry, this is where you arrive.
Melissani Cave Lake
This is the reason most people include Sami in their itinerary. Melissani is a collapsed sea cave containing a saltwater lake of extraordinary clarity and colour — in the middle of the day, when sunlight falls through the opening in the cave roof, the water turns improbable shades of turquoise and cobalt. Boat tours cross the lake in around 15 minutes. The cave is popular: arrive by 9am or book a timed entry slot in advance, especially in July and August. The site is 3km from Sami; a car or scooter is needed.
Drogarati Cave
Three kilometres south of Melissani, Drogarati is a dry cave with remarkable stalactite and stalagmite formations. The main chamber is large enough to have hosted concerts. Entry is inexpensive and crowds are generally lighter than at Melissani.
Antisamos Beach
Five kilometres north of Sami, Antisamos (η Αντίσαμος) is one of the island's most striking beaches — a wide bay of white pebbles framed by steep green hills. It was used as a filming location for Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001). The water is deep blue and excellent for swimming. There can be crowds in August.
The Waterfront
Sami's waterfront square is pleasant in the evenings — a row of tavernas and cafés faces the sea, and the working port adds authenticity that is missing from more touristic villages. A good place for a fish dinner as the sun sets over the strait.
Where to Eat
Riviera on the waterfront is reliable for grilled fish. Adonis is the taverna most locals recommend — family-run, good lamb chops, cold house wine.
Practical Notes
Sami is a practical base for exploring the east coast — Antisamos, Melissani, Drogarati, and the road north toward Fiskardo are all easily accessible. Parking is straightforward in the port area. Ask Memas to help you plan a day around these sites.
