Argostoli vs Lixouri - Which Side of Kefalonia Is Right for You?

Two Towns, One Island

Kefalonia's two main towns sit on opposite sides of the Argolic Gulf, separated by water — and, in character, by rather more than that. Argostoli, the capital, is the island's business and administrative centre: larger, busier, more tourist-facing, with most of the island's banks, supermarkets, hospitals and airport connections. Lixouri is quieter, more local, slower-paced — the kind of town where the same family occupies the same kafeneio table every morning, where the fish comes straight off the boat at the harbour market.

The two towns are connected by a regular passenger and car ferry (30–35 minutes, approximately hourly in summer, €2/person). The crossing is a pleasant trip across the lagoon in itself, and it is one of the practical pleasures of staying on either side.

Argostoli

Best for: First-time visitors, families who want convenience, those who want easy access to transport links and services.

Character: Rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in a functional modern style, Argostoli has grown into a proper small city with a lively central square (Plateia Vallianou), a long waterfront promenade, good restaurants ranging from taverna to modern Greek cuisine, a covered market and evening volta (promenade) culture.

Beaches: The Lassi resort beaches — Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos — are 5–10 minutes away by taxi or local bus. Both are Blue Flag and well-organised, though they get busy in August.

Practical advantages: Hospital, main post office, banks, car rental offices, supermarkets, bus station (KTEL). Airport 9 km away.

Lixouri

Best for: Repeat visitors, those seeking authentic Greek town life, families who prefer quieter beaches, anyone who wants to avoid the tourist trail.

Character: Lixouri is known as «το μικρό Παρίσι» (the little Paris of the Ionian) — a historical nickname that speaks to its cultural pretensions. The town has a lively arts and music tradition, several good tavernas, a wonderful central square with palm trees and kiosks, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely local rather than tourist-facing.

Beaches: Xi Beach (red sand, Blue Flag, 15 minutes) and Petani (spectacular scenery, one of the island's most dramatic, 25 minutes) are both Lixouri-side beaches and worth the trip even from Argostoli.

Practical note: Lixouri is smaller — fewer services, no hospital. The ferry connection to Argostoli keeps everything accessible.

The Ferry Crossing

The Argostoli–Lixouri ferry is a working local ferry, not a tourist attraction, but it is nonetheless one of the more pleasant experiences on the island — particularly in the evening, when the crossing of the lagoon in the golden hour is genuinely beautiful. Vehicles travel for a modest fee; foot passengers pay about €2. The ferry runs from early morning to late evening in season.

Verdict

Stay in Argostoli if you want maximum convenience, services and transport links, and do not mind a busier atmosphere.

Stay in Lixouri if you want a more authentic Greek town experience, prefer the western beaches (Xi, Petani), and enjoy exploring on your own terms.
