Lourdas (also spelled Lourdata) sits on a hillside on Kefalonia's south coast, about 17km from Argostoli. The village itself is modest — a few tavernas, a small minimarket, and a collection of apartments and studios. But the beach below, reached by a steep narrow road through olive groves, is the reason people come.

The Beach

Lourdas Beach stretches in a long gentle curve of approximately 1.2km. The sand is fine and pale, the water shifts through shades of turquoise and blue-green with the light, and the gradient into the sea is reassuringly gentle — safe for children to wade without worry. Sunloungers and umbrellas are available in the central section; the eastern and western ends are free and quieter.

A small beach bar operates in summer. Views from the sand take in the distant outline of Zakynthos (Zante) across the water to the south — particularly vivid in the clear air of early morning and late afternoon.

The Village

The village sits on the slopes above the beach, connected by a steep road that rewards the drive with views across the bay. There are two or three tavernas, a minimarket, and accommodation mostly in the form of studios and apartments. Lourdas has no resort infrastructure — no beach bars on every corner, no organised excursions, no jet-ski operators. This is not a shortcoming for the travellers who choose it.

Practical Information

Walks and Views

A walking path along the ridge above the village offers panoramic views toward Zakynthos and across to the Peloponnese mountains. Best at sunrise or in the late afternoon golden light. The walk from the village takes about 20 minutes to the first viewpoint.
