Agia Efimia: Kefalonia's Diving Capital
Agia Efimia sits on the northeast coast of Kefalonia on the shore of Sami Bay, wedged between mountains and sea. It is a small village — perhaps 300 permanent residents — but it punches above its weight as a base. Clear water, multiple dive sites, a charming harbour, and proximity to Myrtos Beach make it consistently popular with divers, sailors, and independent travellers.
Diving
The waters around Agia Efimia are among the clearest in the Ionian Sea. Key dive sites include underwater caves along the Sami coastline, dramatic wall dives dropping into deep blue water, and several historical wrecks. The local dive schools are well-established and cater to all levels, from beginner Open Water courses to experienced technical dives.

The Harbour
The village centres on a small harbour with a row of tavernas and cafés stretched along the waterfront. Sailing boats and dive boats share the moorings. The atmosphere is relaxed — this is a place for people who come to be in or on the water. In the evenings the waterfront fills with the sound of families eating, children playing, and the occasional clatter of rigging in the breeze.
Gateway to Myrtos and Sami
Agia Efimia's position makes it an ideal base for exploring the northeast:
- Myrtos Beach — 15km north along a spectacular coastal road. Arguably the most photographed beach in Greece: white pebbles, towering limestone cliffs, and a shade of blue in the water that photographs cannot fully capture. The road down to the beach is steep; go early in the morning before the tour buses.
- Sami — 8km south. The island's main ferry port for crossings to Patras and Brindisi (Italy). The town also has the Melissani Cave and Drogarati Cave nearby.

Walking
A path climbs through olive groves above the village to views across Sami Bay and, on clear days, all the way to Ithaca. The walk takes about 45 minutes to the first ridge and is best done in early morning or late afternoon.
