In 2026, Kefalonia holds 13 Blue Flag certifications — a strong showing that reflects both the exceptional quality of the island's waters and the investments made in beach infrastructure.

The 13 Blue Flag Beaches of Kefalonia

Makris Gialos (Lassi): The most popular beach in the Lassi resort area, just west of Argostoli. Long pebble beach with deep, clear water, sunbeds and umbrellas, watersports and easy access by bus from Argostoli.

Platis Gialos (Lassi): Adjacent to Makris Gialos, slightly smaller but equally well-organised. Popular with families and watersports enthusiasts.

Ammes Beach (near Lassi): A quieter pebble beach south of Lassi, calmer waters, popular with families with young children.

Avithos Beach (Svoronata): A Blue Flag sandy beach near the airport village of Svoronata, often less crowded than the Lassi beaches. A taverna operates on the beach in season.

Xi Beach (Paliki peninsula): The most distinctive beach in Kefalonia — its sand is a deep reddish-orange colour, coloured by iron oxide deposits. The sea is shallow and calm, excellent for families. On the western Paliki peninsula, accessible via Lixouri.

Lepeda Beach (Paliki): A quiet Blue Flag beach on the western coast of the Paliki peninsula, near Lixouri. Rocky and pebbly, with clear water.

Vatsa Beach (Paliki): A remote beach on the western Paliki coast, accessible by a winding road. Dramatic scenery, clear water, limited facilities.

Kounopetra Beach (Paliki): Near the famous rocking stone (Kounopetra) on the western tip of Paliki, this beach offers solitude and clear blue water.

Kaminia Beach (near Argostoli): A sheltered Blue Flag beach south of Argostoli bay, calm water, popular with locals.

Lourdas Beach: The long, curving beach at Lourdas on the south coast — a mix of sand and pebbles, calm water, views of Zakynthos, quieter atmosphere than the north coast resorts.

Skala Beach: The long sandy beach at Skala is one of the few sandy Blue Flag beaches on the island, and one of the most important sea turtle nesting grounds. Sunbeds and watersports available.

Katelios Beach: The Blue Flag beach at the fishing village of Katelios, a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. Very peaceful, local atmosphere.

Karavomylos Beach (near Sami): A small beach near Karavomylos village, close to the entrance to Melissani Lake. Convenient for visitors to the cave.

When to Visit

Blue Flag status is maintained through regular monitoring during the summer season (roughly June–September). Outside this window, some facilities may not be operating, but the water quality remains consistently high.
