Here's the thing about Kefalonia's beaches: the most photographed ones aren't always the most practical with a three-year-old, a bag of snacks, and a collapsible shade tent. Myrtos is stunning but steep, pebbly, and shadeless. Petani is wild and beautiful but has zero facilities. We love them — just not with toddlers in tow.

Skala — The Complete Family Beach

If we had to pick one beach for a family holiday base, it would be Skala. The beach runs long and wide along the southeastern coast — golden sand, gradual entry, and water that stays shallow for a good twenty metres out. Kids can wade and splash without anyone panicking.

Pine trees line the back of the beach, giving natural shade in the mornings before the sun swings overhead. There are sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, toilets, and a string of tavernas and mini-markets within walking distance. Parking is easy.

Skala has something else that makes it special for kids: this coastline is a Caretta caretta nesting ground. Between June and August, conservation volunteers mark and protect turtle nests along the sand. Peak season reality: Skala gets busy in July and August. Arrive before 9 in the morning for a good spot near the pines.

Xi Beach — Red Sand and Warm Shallows

Xi is unlike any other beach on the island. The sand is a deep terracotta red from the clay cliffs behind it, and the water is warm and absurdly shallow — toddlers can wade out a long way while barely getting their waists wet. It's on the west coast, south of Lixouri.

Kids love Xi instinctively. The colour, the texture, the warm puddles where the tide pulls back. The clay cliffs were traditionally famous as a natural mud treatment — note that using the clay is no longer permitted, so enjoy the beach as it is. Worth knowing: the available space is more limited than it used to be due to changes in the beach profile, so arrive early in July and August.

Xi is organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, and there's a canteen. Parking is straightforward. The only caveat: the clay-stained sand does mark light swimwear. Bring the old stuff.

Makris Gialos & Platis Gialos — The Easy Day Trip

These twin beaches on the Lassi peninsula are the closest good sand to Argostoli — a short drive or even a walk from the capital. If your accommodation is in town and you want a beach without a major expedition, this is the answer.

Makris Gialos has golden sand, a gentle entry, and is well organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar. Water sports are available — older kids will love the paddleboards and kayaks. Platis Gialos next door is slightly quieter. Both get busy in peak season, but the convenience is hard to beat.

Facilities are solid: toilets, showers, restaurants right behind the beach. For families wanting activities and experiences beyond the beach, Lassi has plenty of options within walking distance.

Tip: the sand entry is better at Makris Gialos; Platis Gialos has some rocky patches near the waterline on the left side.

Ammes — The Hidden Toddler Beach

This tiny beach near Svoronata, south of Argostoli, is one of Kefalonia's best-kept family secrets. Ammes is small, sheltered, and sandy with water so shallow and calm it feels like a natural paddling pool. For toddlers and very young children, it's close to perfect.

There are a few sunbeds, a small taverna right on the sand, and just enough shade from trees at the edges. It's not fancy — no water sports, no beach bar scene — but that's exactly the point. Families with under-fives come back here every day of their holiday.

Parking is limited to a small area off the road. Arrive early or you'll be walking a bit. The beach itself is small, so it does fill up — but the atmosphere stays relaxed.

Avithos — Quiet Sand on the South Coast

Between Lourdas and Svoronata on the southern coast, Avithos is a sandy beach that most tourists drive straight past on their way somewhere else. Their loss. The water is clear and shallow, the sand is soft, and the beach rarely gets crowded even in August.

There's a beach bar with sunbeds and basic facilities, and a pleasant taverna above the beach. Natural shade is limited, so bring your own. The entry is sandy and gradual — safe for small children. It's not the biggest beach, but it has a peaceful quality that families with young kids appreciate.

Good to know: the access road is a bit steep and narrow. Fine in a rental car, just take it slowly.

Lourdas — For Families with Older Kids

Avoid noon to 4 in the afternoon in August. Seriously. Take a long lunch, find a playground, nap. The beach is better at 5.
