The views on Kefalonia are not incidental to the experience of visiting — they are central to it. The island's geology is dramatic: limestone massifs that rise steeply from the sea, forming cliffs of 200m or more along the west coast, and a mountain spine that reaches 1,628m at the summit of Ainos. Each viewpoint offers something distinct.

1. Myrtos Beach Overlook

The viewing platform above Myrtos Beach, on the coastal road between Agia Efimia and Assos, is perhaps the most photographed viewpoint in Greece. The road descends in switchbacks toward the beach, and at one of the bends there is a purpose-built platform with a guard rail.

Below: a perfect semicircle of white pebbles, cliffs of pale limestone rising on both sides, and water in four shades of blue — shallow pale green at the edge, deepening to cobalt toward the centre. The scale of the cliffs is difficult to appreciate until you see the tiny figures of swimmers at the waterline.

When to go: arrive before 09:30 in high season — the platform becomes crowded by 10:00. The light is best in mid-morning when the sun illuminates the beach from the southeast.

2. Assos Peninsula Saddle

Driving north from Argostoli toward Assos, the road climbs and then reaches a saddle above the village where the entire Assos peninsula comes suddenly into view. The Venetian castle sits on the promontory. Below, the village of Assos is a tight cluster of colour arranged around a horseshoe harbour.

When to go: late afternoon, when the light comes from the west and turns the castle walls gold. No walk required — pull over on the roadside.

3. Mount Ainos Summit (1,628m)

The summit of Ainos offers the island's most expansive views. On a clear day all six of the Ionian Islands are visible simultaneously from a single point: Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Paxi, and Corfu in the far north. The view at dawn, when the islands emerge from sea mist, is exceptional.

The summit trail starts from the road-accessible plateau at 1,200m. Allow 2–3 hours for the ascent and the same for the return. Trail maps at kefaloniageopark.gr.

4. Kounopetra / Western Paliki Peninsula

The western tip of the Paliki peninsula, near Lixouri, offers unobstructed views toward the open Ionian Sea. The horizon is clean — no other land in sight — and the quality of light over the water in the hour before sunset is exceptional. The sea turns from turquoise to gold to deep orange as the sun drops.

When to go: arrive 1.5 hours before sunset. The drive from Lixouri takes approximately 25 minutes on a narrow road.

5. Kastro (Castle of Saint George), Peratata

The ramparts of the Castle of Saint George, 9km from Argostoli, offer a composite view: the Argostoli Gulf to the west with the city visible in the distance, the mountains of the island's interior to the north and east, and on clear days the outline of Zakynthos to the south.

The viewpoint is accessible as part of the castle visit (€3 entry). Best in late afternoon when the low western light catches the water in the gulf.
