One of the most common questions we get from visitors planning an Ionian islands trip: can you get directly from Zakynthos (Zante) to Kefalonia by ferry? The answer is yes — but only in summer, and only if you know which port to use. Here's everything you need to know.
The Direct Route: Agios Nikolaos → Pessada
The main direct ferry between the two islands runs from Agios Nikolaos (northern Zakynthos) to Pessada (southern Kefalonia), operated by Ioniansea Ferries.
- Duration: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes
- Season: summer only — roughly late May to late September
- Frequency: up to 7 crossings per week during peak season
- Foot passenger ticket: from €12
- Car ticket: from €38
- With a vehicle: yes, this route has a car deck
One important note on ports: Agios Nikolaos is on the northern coast of Zakynthos, about 30km from Zakynthos Town — factor in travel time to get there. On the Kefalonia side, Pessada is a small, quiet port on the southern coast, just 12km from Argostoli. It's a short taxi or rental car drive to reach the capital.
The Via-Mainland Alternative
If the direct summer ferry doesn't fit your schedule — or you're travelling outside the season — the most reliable route is via the mainland:
- Zakynthos Town → Kyllini (Peloponnese mainland) — Levante Ferries, ~1h15
- Kyllini → Poros (Kefalonia) — ~1 hour
Total journey time is roughly 3–4 hours including the connection, but it runs year-round and gives you much more scheduling flexibility. Tickets are affordable: the Kyllini–Poros leg starts at around €12 per person.
Practical Tips
Book in advance. In July and August, ferries fill up — especially if you have a car. The Agios Nikolaos–Pessada route has limited capacity and popular afternoon departures go fast. Ferryhopper.com is the most reliable platform for checking live availability and booking without hidden fees.
Arrive early with a vehicle. If you're driving on, arrive at the port at least 45 minutes before departure. Greek island ferry ports aren't large — the queue forms fast in peak season.
No same-day return. Current schedules don't easily support a day trip from one island to the other. If you're visiting, plan to stay at least one night.
Island Hopping: Zakynthos + Kefalonia + Ithaca
Here's a route that experienced Ionian travellers use: take the ferry from Zakynthos to Kefalonia (Pessada), spend a few days exploring the island, then catch the short ferry from Sami to Ithaca — just 20–30 minutes and one of the most underrated hops in the Greek islands.
From Sami you can also connect onwards to Lefkada seasonally, or back to the mainland via Patra. The whole circuit — Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca — is very doable in 7–10 days.
