Kefalonia has something that many Greek islands lack: genuine variety for families. Yes, there are excellent beaches. But there are also sea turtles in the harbour, underground caves, boat trips to hidden coves, ancient ruins, a national park with wild horses, and a culture of hospitality that extends naturally to children.

Here's how to plan it well.

Beaches for Families

Skala is the undisputed family champion: the sea shore gently shelves down, making it good for children, while the length of the beach means it rarely gets overcrowded. Pine shade, watersports for older children, calm water.

Xi Beach on the Paliki peninsula is another outstanding family choice: shallow, calm and warm, with the distinctive red-orange clay cliffs making it instantly memorable for children. The soft clay is half the entertainment — children spend hours with it.

Lassi (Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos), just outside Argostoli, is convenient and sandy with gentle waves. Good facilities.

Skala's Roman Villa: Just outside Skala, this small archaeological site has mosaic floors that are remarkably well-preserved — an easy cultural stop that genuinely impresses older children.

The Caves: Child-Pleasing Magic

Melissani Cave — the underground lake where sunlight turns the water blue — is one of those experiences that stays with children for years. The boat ride through the cave, the sudden beam of light, the colour of the water: genuinely memorable. Go before 11am or after 2pm to avoid peak queuing.

Drogarati Cave is equally impressive for older children — 150 million years old, with stalactites and an acoustic quality that fascinates.

Sea Turtles at Koutavos

The morning turtle watch at Argostoli harbour and the De Bosset Bridge is a highlight for families. Loggerhead sea turtles can be spotted in the harbour area regularly. Walk the bridge at 8-9am and the turtles surface regularly. No equipment needed — just patience and quiet.

Boat Trips

Organised boat trips from Argostoli or Agia Efimia offer everything children love: swimming in secluded coves, snorkelling, possibly dolphin sightings, and the drama of arriving at a beach only accessible by sea. Half-day and full-day options available from May through September.

Mount Ainos: Wild Horses

The drive up Mount Ainos through the national park is family-friendly by car — the road goes most of the way to the summit. The wild horses that roam the upper slopes are a highlight for children, entirely unexpected on a Greek island.

Practical Family Tips

Buggy/pram: Manageable in Argostoli town but difficult on beaches (pebbles) and village roads. Bring a carrier for infants.

Food: Greek food is incredibly family-friendly. Children eat well everywhere — grilled fish, pasta, chips, salads. Tavernas are genuinely welcoming to families at all hours.

Driving: Roads outside Argostoli are quiet and comparable to minor A-roads in the UK — barriers on steep drops, and generally wide enough for two cars to pass.

Car: A car is essential for families. Book before arriving.
