July and August are when Kefalonia shifts into full gear. The ferries are packed, the airports busy, the beaches full by 10am and the tavernas humming until midnight. For many visitors this is exactly what they came for — the full, joyful, chaotic energy of a Greek island in high summer.
The sea is at its warmest from mid-July to mid-September, and this is the ideal period for swimming. July averages 30°C by day with 12 hours of sunshine; August peaks at 31°C. Evenings stay warm — dinner at 9pm on a harbour-front terrace, under a sky full of stars, is the Kefalonian summer in its purest form.
The Beaches in July-August
Every major beach is operational and busy. Myrtos is at its most spectacular — the water at peak turquoise — but arrive before 9am or after 5pm to find space. The viewpoint above the beach is itself worth stopping for.
Antisamos fills up fast on summer weekends. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot. Xi Beach on Paliki is popular with families — the shallow, calm water and red clay cliffs make it distinctive. Skala has the longest sandy stretch and the most facilities.
For escape: Petani Beach on the west coast of the Paliki peninsula is one of the island's most dramatic — turquoise water, white pebbles, backed by sheer cliffs. Less known than Myrtos, equally beautiful. Emblisi near Fiskardo is small, rocky and largely known only to sailors and locals.
Evening Life
Argostoli's waterfront is the island's social centre in summer — the Lithostroto pedestrian street buzzes with kafeneions and gelaterie, the harbour is lined with boats. Fiskardo by night is one of the most romantic settings in the Ionian: harbour lights on the water, the sound of rigging, tables that fill with a glamorous, international crowd.
Lixouri across the bay has a more local night — the main square, a glass of wine, conversations that go on past midnight.
Practical Warnings for High Season
Book everything in advance: car rental, restaurants in Fiskardo, popular boat trips. July–August without advance booking is a recipe for frustration.
Beat the heat: Temperatures can exceed 30°C — avoid beach peaks between 12:00 and 16:00. Morning and late afternoon are the times to be active. Midday is for shade, food and sleep.
Water: Carry water everywhere. The island's roads and trails have limited shade.
Roads: The island gets crowded in mid-July to late August, particularly with Greeks on vacation. Leave early for long drives.
