Ask the people who know this island well when they prefer to come. Most will say September without hesitation. And they're right.

The sea in September is at its absolute warmest — 25.5°C, the thermal peak of the Ionian built up over three months of summer sun. The days are still long and sunny (around 10 hours of sunshine), temperatures sit in the comfortable 23–27°C range, and the crowds that defined August have thinned considerably. The island doesn't empty — September remains busy — but it breathes again.

Prices drop. Fiskardo tables are available without a week's notice. Myrtos has space at 10am. The roads are quieter. And the quality of the light — lower, warmer, golden in the late afternoon — makes everything look better.

The Weather in September

Average highs of 27°C dropping gradually through the month. The sea holds at 25–25.5°C for most of September, cooling slightly toward October. Sunshine averages around 10 hours per day. Rain begins to return — around 4 rainy days in the month — but these are usually brief and often arrive as dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that clear by evening. They are, in their way, beautiful.

Beaches in September

This is the month when Kefalonia's beaches show their best selves. The water is at its warmest, the light is gentler than in high summer, and the pressure has eased.

Myrtos in September is extraordinary. The late afternoon light on the limestone cliffs turns them amber and gold. Arrive at 4pm and the beach is manageable, the water perfect, the views at their most atmospheric.

Antisamos is at its green-hill best in September — the surrounding vegetation still lush, the water as clear as it gets.

Petanoi on the Paliki peninsula: September is the ideal month for this beach. Drive from Lixouri, bring lunch, stay all day.

For the more adventurous, the hike to Fteri Beach is now manageable at almost any time of day — the September temperatures make the trail significantly less demanding than in July or August.

Activities in September

Hiking on Mount Ainos returns to being genuinely pleasant. The summit views in September's clear post-summer air are exceptional — Ithaca, Zakynthos, the mainland all visible on a good day.

Boat trips continue through September with less demand and better availability. Day trips to Ithaca, sunset cruises, kayaking along the northern coast — all more relaxed than in peak season.

Sea turtles remain reliably present in Argostoli Bay through September. Morning visits to the harbour and the De Bosset Bridge give the best sightings.

The Robola harvest begins in late September. The Robola Cooperative in the Omala Valley is worth visiting at this time — the vineyards are at their most active, the valley fragrant, and fresh-harvest wines available for tasting.

Practical Notes for September

Book accommodation and car rental but don't panic — September availability is significantly better than August. Good hotels and rental cars are available with 2–4 weeks' notice rather than months.

Flights: direct UK and Northern European routes to EFL begin to wind down in late September. Check schedules carefully — some routes operate only to mid-September, others to late October.

Packing: light summer clothes for the day, a light layer for evenings. The September evenings are comfortable but can feel cooler than August after sunset.
