Ask any regular Kefalonia visitor when they prefer to come. Most will tell you June without hesitation. The data backs them up: with average highs of 27°C, 13.2 hours of daily sunshine and only 11% rainy days, June scores 9.5/10 — one of the island's most reliable weather windows. The sea, around 22°C, is warm enough for long swims. And the island, while busier than May, hasn't yet reached the breathless pace of August.
June is the month when Kefalonia opens fully. Every restaurant, every beach bar, every boat trip operator. The island is alive — but the roads are still driveable, the beaches still offer space, and the tavernas still have tables without a reservation.
What June Feels Like
Days reach 27°C in Argostoli with 11 hours of bright sunshine, while evenings cool to 17°C — perfect for long dinners on waterfront terraces. Rain is largely unnecessary to worry about: only around 2 rainy days in the whole month. Early June still has the lush green landscape of spring; by late June the hills begin their summer gold.
June is the preferred month for many experienced visitors — not too hot, not too busy, and with sea warm enough for daily swimming.
Beaches: The Last Window Before the Crowds
June is the last month you can reliably visit Myrtos and not queue. The famous white pebble beach under its limestone cliffs is at its most photogenic — the water a vivid blue-turquoise that seems to change shade by the hour. Go before 10am or after 5pm for the best light and fewest people.
Antisamos is equally rewarding in June: backed by its characteristic green hills, the water clear and cool. Skala, the long sandy beach in the south, is fully operational but never packed. Xi Beach on the Paliki peninsula draws crowds on weekends but is manageable mid-week.
For something more adventurous: Fteri Beach, accessible only after a steep hike, rewards with water of an impossible blue-green. In June the wildflowers are still fading on the trail — and the beach at the bottom is as close to deserted as it gets on a Greek island in summer.
Activities in June
Boat trips begin in earnest in June — day trips to Ithaca, sunset cruises, kayaking along the northern coast. Book a day or two ahead rather than at the last minute.
Hiking on Mount Ainos is still viable in June, but go early. By midday the heat on the open sections is significant. The summit views — Ithaca, Zakynthos, the whole Ionian spread below — are worth the early start.
Sea turtles at Koutavos: The loggerhead turtles are reliably present in Argostoli Bay throughout June. Morning visits to the harbour and the De Bosset Bridge give the best sightings.
Caves: Melissani and Drogarati are excellent in June — the midday light in Melissani hits its peak when the sun is directly overhead. Go between 12:00 and 14:00 for the full colour effect.
June Event: Koutavos Lagoon Day
On 7 June 2026, environmental groups organise presentations, guided walks and children's activities focusing on the lagoon's wildlife and conservation — a lovely local event that gives visitors a different lens on the island's natural environment.
Practical Notes
June is one of the best times to visit Kefalonia — warm and sunny with a more relaxed atmosphere than July-August, and accommodation at better prices. Book car rental well in advance: availability starts tightening from June onwards. UV levels are high — sunscreen is non-negotiable.
