July is when Kefalonia shifts into another gear entirely. The ferries are full, the airport busy, every beach has its sun loungers out and every taverna its tables on the pavement. The water reaches 24°C — warm enough to stay in for hours. The days are long: up to 12 hours of sunshine, temperatures regularly hitting 30°C, evenings that cool to a pleasant 20°C perfect for outdoor dining.

This is the island at full pace, and for many visitors it's exactly what they came for.

The Weather in July

July is consistently Kefalonia's hottest and driest month. Expect daytime highs of 27–31°C with almost no rain — historically around 3 rainy days for the entire month. The sea temperature reaches 24°C, making it ideal for swimming, snorkelling and water activities. UV levels are high: avoid the beach between 11am and 4pm, wear high-factor sunscreen, and carry water everywhere.

Evenings cool to around 20°C — comfortable for long dinners on waterfront terraces, which is essentially the Kefalonian summer in its purest form.

Beaches in July: Go Early or Go Late

Every major beach is operational and magnificent. The challenge is timing.

Myrtos is at its most spectacular in July — the water a deep turquoise against the white pebbles and limestone cliffs. But arrive after 10am in peak weeks and the car park is full. The solution: arrive before 9am for the best light and a space, or return after 5pm when the tour buses have gone and the afternoon light turns golden on the cliffs.

Antisamos fills up fast on summer weekends. Weekday mornings are your window.

Petanoi Beach on the Paliki peninsula is Myrtos's quieter sibling — equally dramatic, less visited. Worth the drive from Lixouri.

Skala has the island's longest sandy beach and the facilities to match. Families dominate here and the calm water makes it ideal for children.

For something completely different: the hike to Fteri Beach is brutal in July heat — do not attempt it in midday temperatures. But at 7am or 6pm, it remains one of the island's great rewards.

Events in July

The municipality organises concerts, folk-dance performances and cultural events on the Argostoli waterfront throughout July. Dance groups from Kefalonia and neighbouring islands perform traditional choreography on the open-air stage in the main square, accompanied by live musicians. Artisans and food producers set up stalls along the harbour. These events are free, local and genuinely worth attending.

August 15 approaches: the biggest religious festival of the Kefalonian calendar — the feast of Saint Gerasimos at the Monastery of Omala — falls on August 16, meaning July's final days see preparations beginning across the island.

Practical Tips for July

Book everything in advance. Car rental, restaurants in Fiskardo, popular boat trips — July without advance booking is a recipe for frustration. Fiskardo especially fills to capacity; if you want a table at a harbour restaurant on a Saturday evening, you need a reservation.

Drive early. The mountain road to Myrtos, the descent to Assos, the road to Fiskardo — all manageable in early morning or late afternoon. Avoid peak midday traffic on the main routes.

Hydrate aggressively. The island has limited shade on its roads and trails. Carry at least 1.5 litres per person for any outdoor activity.

Caves are perfect. Melissani Cave and Drogarati Cave maintain a cool 14–17°C year-round — welcome midday relief from the heat.
