August is Kefalonia at its most intense. The temperature peaks at 31°C. The sea reaches its warmest — 25°C, perfect for long swims and water sports. The island is full: Greek families on their summer holidays join the international visitors, and the energy everywhere is high. Restaurants are packed, beaches busy by 9am, harbours full of boats.
And in the middle of it all — on August 16 — the island stops for its most important day of the year.
The Weather in August
August is consistently Kefalonia's warmest month. Average highs of 31°C, with occasional days exceeding 35°C. The sea is at its warmest at 25°C. Evenings are balmy at around 20°C — perfect for outdoor dining that runs until midnight. Rain is essentially absent. Sunshine averages 11–12 hours per day.
The heat in August is genuine and should be respected. Plan beach time for early morning or late afternoon. Midday is for shade, food and the slow pleasures of the Greek summer.
August 16: The Feast of Saint Gerasimos
The single most important event in the Kefalonian calendar falls on August 16 — the feast day of Saint Gerasimos, the island's patron saint. The Monastery of Saint Gerasimos in the Omala Valley becomes the centre of the island's world: the saint's reliquary is carried in procession, the faithful pass beneath it, and the monastery grounds fill with thousands of people from across Greece and the diaspora.
If you're visiting Kefalonia in August, go. Whether or not you have a religious connection, witnessing this gathering — the scale of it, the emotion, the deep communal feeling — is one of those experiences that stays with you long after the island itself has faded from view.
The monastery is 13km from Argostoli. The drive through the Omala Valley on August 16 is slow — plan accordingly and arrive early.
Beaches in August
Every beach is open and at capacity. The key is timing and choosing wisely.
Myrtos is extraordinary but requires strategy: arrive before 8:30am or after 5:30pm. The viewpoint above the beach at sunset is worth the trip even if you don't descend to the beach.
Petanoi on the Paliki peninsula remains one of the island's best-kept secrets even in August — dramatically beautiful, white pebbles, turquoise water, slightly less accessible and therefore slightly less crowded than Myrtos.
Antisamos, backed by its dense green hills, fills up on weekends. Mid-week mornings are the window.
Skala with its long sandy beach and calm water is ideal for families and handles the August crowds better than the smaller pebble beaches.
Practical Notes for August
This is the island at maximum capacity. Hotels, car rentals, ferry spaces and restaurant tables all need to be booked weeks or months in advance. Last-minute availability in August is essentially non-existent in popular areas.
The Lixouri ferry runs every half hour in August — the 15-minute crossing from Argostoli is itself a pleasure and gives access to the quieter Paliki beaches.
Water: carry it everywhere. The island's roads and trails have limited shade and the August heat is serious.
