Paddling the Coastline of Kefalonia
There is no better way to explore the hidden coastline of Kefalonia than from the water. A kayak puts you at the level of the sea, allowing you to slip into narrow sea caves, round headlands invisible from any road, and land on beaches accessible only by boat. The island's northern coast is the main kayaking zone, centred on Fiskardo — but routes along the eastern shore near Agia Efimia and the sheltered western inlets offer rewarding alternatives.
Fiskardo Kayak
The island's most established sea kayaking operator, Fiskardo Kayak, is based at Fiskardo harbour and offers a range of options for all abilities:
- Guided half-day tours (3–4 hours): covering Emblisi Bay, Foki cove, the sea cave at Cape Dafnoudi and the northern beaches. Groups of maximum 8 paddlers. From €45 per person.
- Full-day tours (6–7 hours): extending the route north to Kimilia and the wild coves beyond the cape. Lunch stop included. From €75 per person.
- Kayak hire: Sit-on-top kayaks for independent exploration by the hour or day, with a safety briefing. From €15/hour.
All tours include buoyancy aids, paddles and a waterproof bag. No previous kayaking experience is required for the guided half-day tours.
The Sea Cave Route
The highlight of paddling from Fiskardo is the series of sea caves and rock arches along the north cape. At low swell, kayaks can enter the largest cave — a cathedral-like chamber where the water glows blue-green in the morning light — and pass through to the small cove on the other side. This is a feature unique to this stretch of coast.
Eastern Shore Route
A second kayaking option centres on Agia Efimia on the northeast coast. The sheltered waters here suit beginner paddlers well, and the rocky coastline south of the village offers interesting channels and small sea caves. Several dive centres in Agia Efimia also offer kayak hire.
