Why Kefalonia for a Wedding?
Kefalonia has everything a destination wedding requires: extraordinary scenery (clifftop villas, Venetian castles, turquoise bays), high-quality local food and wine, a growing infrastructure of experienced wedding planners, and an island that feels genuinely special rather than mass-produced. It is consistently voted one of the best wedding destinations in Greece by couples from the UK, Ireland, Australia, and North America.
Ceremony Options
Civil Ceremony
A legal civil ceremony for foreign nationals can be performed in Argostoli by the local civil registrar (Ληξιαρχείο). Both parties must provide:
- Valid passports
- Birth certificates (with apostille stamp if issued outside Greece)
- Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) or equivalent from your home country, issued no more than 6 months before the wedding date
- Certified translations of all documents into Greek
Allow 3–4 months minimum for document preparation. A locally-based wedding planner who speaks Greek is invaluable for navigating the bureaucratic process.
Symbolic Ceremony
Symbolic ceremonies have no legal standing but allow complete creative freedom — venue, format, officiant, vows, and timing are entirely your choice. The legal registration happens at a registry office at home, before or after the event on Kefalonia. This is the most popular option for UK, Australian, and North American couples.
Greek Orthodox Religious Ceremony
Available to Orthodox Christians. A priest from the local diocese must officiate. Enquire at least 6 months in advance.
Venues
Clifftop villas with Ionian views — particularly north of Fiskardo, where terraced properties look directly over the sea toward Ithaca. These offer privacy, stunning backdrops, and catering flexibility.
Assos Castle — the forecourt of the 16th-century Venetian castle above Assos village is available for ceremonies with prior arrangement. One of the most dramatic settings in the Mediterranean.
Boat ceremonies — anchoring in a sheltered bay and marrying on the deck of a traditional wooden kaiki is a genuinely Kefalonian option, offered by several local operators.
Village churches — small whitewashed churches in the hill villages offer simplicity and intimacy. Dress code applies.
Best Time of Year
- May and June: reliable weather, long daylight hours, fewer tourists — sunset at 21:00 or later in June
- September: warm sea, cooling evenings, harvest season atmosphere
- July and August: peak season — hot, busy, accommodation at a premium, but weather is almost guaranteed
Avoid July–August if budget or overcrowding is a concern. June is the sweet spot for most international couples.
Planning Timeline
- 18+ months before: set the date, book the venue
- 12 months: hire the wedding planner, confirm suppliers (photographer, catering, flowers)
- 6 months: begin document collection for civil ceremonies
- 3 months: final CNI application, final guest logistics
Local Kefalonia wedding planners operate across social media and local listing platforms; your accommodation can recommend specialists.
