Katelios is not a beach resort. It does not have hotels, beach bars or a string of sunbeds. What it has is a small harbour wall, a cluster of tavernas serving grilled fish and fresh salads, an unhurried pace of life, and — before dawn every morning — the sound of fishing boat engines starting up.

The village sits on the south coast of Kefalonia, about 30 km from Argostoli by road, and it is one of the few places on the island where traditional small-scale fishing is still the main economic activity. Local fishermen set lobster pots, drag nets and long lines in the southern Ionian waters, returning each morning with whatever the sea has offered.

The Fishing Experience

Several fishermen in Katelios offer sunrise fishing trips for visitors. These are informal arrangements — best booked through your accommodation, through the local tavernas, or simply by asking at the harbour the evening before. A typical trip runs from around 5:30am to 9:30am and includes:

The species caught depend on season and conditions but typically include sea bream, red mullet, octopus, squid, and — with luck — sea bass, dentex or scorpionfish.

After the Catch

The morning's catch often goes directly to the harbourside tavernas for the lunch service. If your trip yields a good haul, you can sometimes arrange to have your fish cooked at the taverna — grilled over charcoal and served with bread and a glass of local wine, it makes for one of the more memorable meals on the island.

Caretta Turtles

Katelios Beach and the nearby Mounda Beach are important nesting grounds for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The ARCHELON Sea Turtle Protection Society monitors both beaches during nesting season (late May to September). The fishermen of Katelios are acutely aware of the turtles and follow protocols to minimise bycatch — part of what makes the traditional fishing here genuinely sustainable.
